In a statement, the U.S. Mission said the UN's New York Declaration for Refugees and Migrants - recognized by the U.S. past year under the Obama administration - "contains numerous provisions that are inconsistent with U.S. immigration and refugee policies".

In a statement issued on Saturday, Hayley said: "America is proud of our immigrant heritage and our longstanding moral leadership in providing support to migrant and refugee populations across the globe".

Foreign Policy magazine said the president's decision to pull out of the negotiations "highlighted the enduring influence of Stephen Miller, the 32-year-old senior White House policy advisor who has championed the Trump administration's efforts to sharply restrict immigration" to the U.S.

The migration announcement came two days before a United Nations conference on migration in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, in which the United States had been expected to actively participate.

A bitter pill for bank branch customers
The bank said it was seeking to manage job losses on a voluntary basis and keep compulsory redundancies to a minimum. They will also educate on issues such as fraud and scam protection.

"While we will continue to engage on a number of fronts at the United Nations", Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said in a statement Sunday, "in this case, we simply cannot in good faith support a process that could undermine the sovereign right of the United States to enforce our immigration laws and secure our borders".

In 2016, the administration of Barack Obama, who was then President of the United States, made a decision to join the NY Declaration on migration.

In September of 2016, the members of the U.N. General Assembly unanimously adopted the New York Declaration for Refugees and Migrants, a non-binding declaration committed to upholding the rights of refugees that sought to enhance global coordination on migration. We will decide how well the border will be controlled and who will be allowed to enter our country.

The UN General Assembly president said he was disappointed with the decision.

He added that the United States "has the experience and expertise to help ensure that this process leads to a successful outcome".

Despite the US withdrawal, the United Nations should not miss this opportunity to improve the lives of millions of people throughout the world through global migration compact, it said. "As a result, President Trump determined that the United States would end its participation in the compact process that aims to reach worldwide consensus at the UN in 2018", the U.S. statement said.
