CNN Botches Report on Trump Administration's Early Access to the DNC Leaks

From bombshell to dud CNN botches report on Trump Wikileaks

US President Donald Trump

Multiple reports published Friday threw cold water on a CNN story that said the Trump campaign received advance WikiLeaks information in an email, reporting that the information in the email was already public.

Friday's story had initially said that the email was sent to Trump and campaign officials on September 4, 2016.

CBS News separately confirmed the email Friday, originally reporting as CNN did that the message was sent on September 4.

The implication, of course, is that the email was another bit of evidence that the Trump campaign was secretly in cahoots with Wikileaks during the election.

The date matters. CNN's report indicated that the Trump campaign had been fed hacked email files belonging to the Democratic National Committee and former secretary of state Colin Powell more than a week before the files were released publicly.

Roger Goodell Signs Contract Extension With "Nearly Unanimous Consensus" Among Owners
He was mainly displeased due to the way the league handled the situation of Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott . On the other hand, Goodell remains distrusted by many NFL players and fans of the league.

The Fox News host said that the error left CNN "once again with fried egg on its face". It was also the lead story on its homepage for much of Friday morning and into the afternoon. According the Post, he denied reports that he spoke to his father about a statement to the New York Times before the paper broke a story about the Russian lawyer.

But at 1 p.m. ET, the story unraveled. Because Sept. 4 coincided with the day Trump tweeted about Wikileaks (he shared an article from The Gateway Pundit), CNN seems to have jumped to the conclusion that it was inspired by this very email.

Wall Street Journal reporter Rebecca Ballhaus soon chimed in, adding that the email came from a small-time Trump donor and was "riddled with typos".

As of publication, CNN has not updated the story.

So, two of CNNs ace political reporters managed to write a “bombshell” story, which presumably made it through at least one round of edits, and was also probably reviewed by the networks legal department, without anybody double-checking the date of the email - the crux of the entire.

"We're going to cut right through the fake news media". WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange later tweeted that he did not see how WikiLeaks was connected to CNN's story.

Shortly after publishing its initial report, ABC was forced to issue a crucial correction: Flynn actually planned to testify that Trump son-in-law Jared Kushner ordered him to reach out to representatives of the Russian government during the transition.
