When he tapped on the window, the driver, identified as Thomas Cabrera, 38, woke up and put the vehicle into gear.

The incident began when Cusack, a 20-year veteran of the Pembroke Pines police force, responded to a local resident's call about two people passed out inside a vehicle, ABC-affiliate KABC reported.

On his way to Century Village's Pembroke Road and 129th Avenue exit, Cabrera allegedly tried to ram into Pembroke Pines Fire Rescue trucks that were responding to the original overdose call.

Cusak reached into the vehicle in an attempt to stop Cabrera and was dragged for more than half a mile at speeds of up to 60 miles per hour, according to authorities.

The vehicle was heading east on I-595 as police were pursuing closely behind it.

Police say Cabrera also tried to pry the officer's fingers off the door with one hand as he steered the auto with the other. When Cusack arrived at the vehicle, he confronted the driver, named as Thomas Cabrera, before opening the auto door. The car's passenger was also taken into custody.

Cusack, a 19-year veteran of the department, underwent surgery for serious injuries but is expected to recover.

The officer sustained injuries during the pursuit.

Police said he admitted that he and his fiance were doing heroin and cocaine in the vehicle before Cusack woke him up.

Cabrera is now facing charges of fleeing the scene of a crime, evading arrest, driving with a suspended license and attempted murder of a police officer.
