Fodder scam verdict: Lalu Prasad Yadav Sentenced To 3.5 years in jail

Key Indian opposition leader Lalu Prasad Yadav was jailed Saturday for three and a half years over his role in a multi-million dollar corruption case.

The court had yesterday concluded arguments on the quantum of sentence against Prasad in connection with the withdrawal of Rs 89.27 lakh from the Deoghar Treasury between 1990 and 1994 when he was the chief minister of Bihar.

The punishment was handed down to 69-year-old Prasad by CBI court judge Shiv Pal Singh through videoconferencing since the RJD leader is lodged in Birsa Munda Central Jail after being convicted in the case on December 23, CBI counsel Rakesh Prasad said. Lalu could have got bail if he is sentenced to less than three years in prison.

The court also said if he fails to furnish the fine, his jail term would extend by six months.
