Rare Lunar Trifecta to Grace Skies this Wednesday

A lunar eclipse happens when the moon is completely in the Earth's shadow. After 150 years, the unique astronomical event will be seen from many countries including India, Russia, Australia, China and Thailand. Institute Director Dr Anil Pandey said, "On the 31st, the moon will be on the closer orbit to the earth".

UNO's Mallory Kountze Planetarium does not have any public events planned for the lunar events, she said, mainly because special equipment is not required, it is a morning event, and winter mornings can be extremely cold. Not only is the atmosphere smog-free but after the recent snowfall, the skies have become clearer.

PITTS: The first full moon was January 1. This type of moon can sometimes be referred to as a blood moon, or even a snow moon as it is by some Native American tribes. The moon orbits around the Earth and as a result we see different amounts of the lit-up side.

Searchers find body believed to be missing NC boy, Federal Bureau of Investigation says
The FBI's Child Abduction Rapid Deployment Team, a group of highly-trained experts in the field of missing children, is assisting. Authorities plan to continue ground searchers Friday in addition to draining a pond near the area where Raul was last seen.

While most of the world will be able to the see the super- and blue moons because it's tied to the eclipse, the odds of also seeing a blood moon depend on where one is. It seems another Super Blue Blood Moon will occur only 19 years from now: January 31, 2037, at 8:06 a.m. This event will be worth a watch! However, sunrise here is 7:06 a.m., so New Yorkers will glimpse only the start of the eclipse.

Where the moon is covered by the Earth's shadow, known as the period of totality, it will last just over one and a quarter hours, according to EarthSky. The eclipse will end at 9.38 PM.

During this kind of eclipse, the moon moves fully into Earth's dark shadow, making the natural satellite glow with a creepy red pallor for those lucky enough to see it. When the moon is closest to the earth, which is also known as its perigee point, it is called the Supermoon.

The last time a total lunar eclipse took place in Detroit was September 28, 2015.

Like the Earth, half the moon is illuminated by the sun at any one time. Although it does not have a scientific definition, a "blood moon" occurs during a lunar eclipse when faint red sunbeams peek out around the edges of the moon, giving it a reddish, copper color. That said, don't worry if you can't tell the difference between this supermoon and your average full moon, because it likely won't look all that much brighter to most casual observers.
