At least 18 people in Hong Kong have been killed and 50 others injured after a double-decker bus toppled over on a major highway.

The death toll included 15 men and three women, a police spokeswoman said on condition of anonymity.

The bus was carrying spectators and workers from horse races when it overturned in the New Territories area in Hong Kong. Rescuers had to cut open the top of the bus to save the passengers, reported Xinhua.

Witnesses told horrific stories of watching dazed and bloody passengers drag themselves from the mangled wreckage.

General Manager Godwin So Wai-kei attended the scene of the crash, telling reporters the company would issue a "condolence allowance" of HK$80,000 (£7,200, $10,000) to injured passengers and the families of the deceased.
