South Africa's rand steadied against the dollar early on Tuesday as investors waited to hear whether President Jacob Zuma will resign as head of state after reports that the ruling African National Congress (ANC) had instructed him to step down.

The Secretary-General of South Africa's ANC said Zuma did not threaten to challenge his removal by the party in court, as speculated by local media.

It was called to decide on a transition of power to the party's new leader, Cyril Ramaphosa, said the people, who declined to be identified because the decision hasn't been made public.

The country will hold its general elections next year, and the ANC is seen as anxious not to allow Zuma to lead it to the polls and shed further support. "There's no deadline; tomorrow the president will respond". This follows after Zuma did not address the nation on his decision to resign after he was recalled by the ANC's highest decision-making body on Tuesday. "He told them he was not going anywhere as he did nothing wrong", an unnamed ANC committee member told the Mail and Guardian newspaper.

The recall does not remove Zuma from office, but it does corner him. "He hasn't been told yet", the source said.

As the Gupta-linked investigation proceeds, Zuma also could face corruption charges tied to an arms deal two decades ago.

Zuma's spokesman could not be reached for comment on Wednesday.

The embattled president has faced a number of corruption scandals and was replaced as ANC leader in December. The Economic Freedom Fighters, the third biggest party, last month proposed the no-confidence motion that's now due to be debated on 22 February, and plans to go to court if it isn't brought forward.

"I think Jacob Zuma is nearly daring the ANC to remove him through a motion of no confidence because he knows that would be damaging for unity in the party", analyst Abdul Waheed Patel told AFP.
