24 flu-related hospitalizations reported in LeFlore County

DE public health officials say the death toll from the flu has risen to 18.

Twenty-eight flu-associated deaths were reported last week, bringing the total to 135 this season, including two pediatric cases. A 10-year-old girl with underlying health conditions died this month, according to the Texas Department of State Health Services.

As part of its #FighttheFluNJ campaign, New Jersey Department of Health officials are visiting hospitals, nursing homes, rehab facilities and county health departments to promote flu vaccination for not only patients, but health care workers as well. No appointments are necessary.

The flu season appears to be winding down for East Tennessee as well as most of the U.S. "Hopefully, the worst is past us".

While seasonal flu outbreaks can happen as early as October, flu activity is usually highest between December and February, and can last through the spring. It can cause more inflammation than other influenza strains, which puts extra stress on the immune system and it takes longer to fight off.

"The findings may not apply to, let's say, a young healthy person that has a mild case of influenza and never even needed to go to the doctor", Schwartz said, adding that the flu vaccine is nevertheless important for them because "younger, healthier people tend to be the reservoirs of influenza".
