Starbeck KFC closure as chicken runs out

The company said they would not lower their expectations on the quality of their chicken, therefore leaving restaurants closed or with a smaller menu.

More than 800 of the 900 KFC locations in the United Kingdom were closed February 19 with roughly 600 stores remaining closed during the lunchtime on February 20 in Great Britain.

News of the shortage caused a storm on social media, as customers told of having to find nearby branches that would serve them chicken.

The Chron reported yesterday that a number of fast-food outlets in town had shut up shop after failing to receive a chicken delivery. "The chicken just crossed the road, just not to our restaurants", the global company said in a statement.

According to the KFC website, the Portsmouth stores in North Harbour and Commercial Road are open, as is the store in Lederle Lane, Gosport.

The problem wasn't due to a shortage of chicken itself, but KFC's new delivery partner DHL, the company said in a statement.

KFC said it was all due to "teething problems" with a new delivery contractor, which meant it ran out of chicken at some stores.

Until last Tuesday, KFC's chicken was delivered by South African-owned distribution group Bidvest, which describes itself as "the leading supplier of logistical and supply chain solutions to the United Kingdom hospitality and restaurant sector".

About 80 per cent of KFC outlets are franchises.

"We're updating this as regularly as we can, and our teams are working around the cluck to get the rest back up and running as soon as possible", KFC UK & Ireland said.

It said it was encouraging franchisees to adopt the same policies despite operating their own contracts of employment.

KFC used to get chicken delivered through a South African-distribution group called Bidvest.
