A salmonella outbreak across 20 states has been linked to the unregulated herbal supplement known as kratom, warned the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Some consumers have hailed the drug as a "natural" pain remedy, but some medical experts say it can be unsafe, even deadly.
When patients were interviewed about what they ate in the months before becoming ill, eight of 11 patients (73 percent) said they had consumed kratom pills, powers or teas, according to the CDC.
"No common brands or suppliers of kratom have been identified at this time".

Beyond this recent salmonella outbreak, kratom is becoming a topic of concern across multiple agencies, including the CDC and the Food and Drug Administration, for other reasons.
Here's what health officials know so far, and what you need to keep in mind. It is typically brewed in a tea, chewed, smoked, or ingested in capsules. Kratom has discovered a following in the United States, where there are 3 million to 5 million clients, as per the American Kratom Association. Gottlieb compared the substance mixes of kratom to opioids. "The investigation indicates that kratom products could be contaminated with Salmonella and could make people sick", the CDC says on its website.
Kratom is the name used for leaves from an evergreen tree found in Southeast Asia. A few months later, in the autumn of 2016, the DEA said it would delay rendering a decision on kratom until the FDA was able to complete a scientific evaluation of the supplement.

When intended for use as or in a dietary supplement, the FDA considers kratom to be a new dietary ingredient.
"Kratom is a plant consumed for its stimulant effects and as an opioid substitute". "FDA is concerned that kratom, which affects the same opioid brain receptors as morphine, appears to have properties that expose users to the risks of addiction, abuse, and dependence", the alert reads.
