Canadian Politician Sues CTV over Sexual Misconduct Reporting

In a four-page statement posted on social media, Brown says he is quitting the party's leadership race because it has been hard on his family, and his candidacy has distracted from the policy discussion needed for the party as it heads toward a spring election.

Despite his having dropped out of the Progressive Conservative leadership race, Haldimand-Norfolk MPP Toby Barrett predicts that former party leader Patrick Brown will be a deciding factor in the results.

"They just lost their leader because of these unfounded allegations and these vicious attacks. they will be looking for a strong leader, an outsider, if you will, to come in and clean house", Barrett said.

Brown's departure plunged the Tories into chaos, exposing a deep rift between the party executive, which kicked him out of caucus, and the base. The notice must be filed before a formal lawsuit can proceed.

Brown called the news report as "false, malicious, irresponsible and defamatory".

In one case, CTV alleged, the accuser was in high school some 10 years ago when she and a mutual friend met Brown in a Barrie bar and illegally started feeding her drinks. He says in a Facebook post that accounts questioning his integrity are likely to emerge in the coming weeks, claiming a small group of insiders is trying to derail his efforts to reclaim his old job.

For now, there no figure was attached to the suit, although there was the standard demand for "a full apology and retraction" from CTV. The source also says Brown's mother has been hospitalised due to stress. However, Hillier has filed a complaint over Brown's personal finances with Ontario's Integrity Commissioner.
