Richard Sherman meeting with 49ers

The Seahawks released Richard Sherman after seven seasons, choosing to cut costs and take the team in a new direction. At that point, if the 49ers like what they see, the team "will try to get a contract done" and there's a "real chance" it will happen, according to ESPN.

His first stop is Santa Clara, Calif., and Adam Schefter of ESPN reported Saturday that it could very well be his only visit with the expectation the 49ers are ready to write a check if Sherman's surgically repaired Achilles passes inspection.

Sherman became a star in Seattle, bringing a brash attitude and willingness to speak out on any topic to go along with his stellar play. Sherman discussed Friday on KIRO-AM in Seattle what he's looking for in a new team.

If he joined the 49ers, Sherman would also be reunited with his partner for one of the most famous plays in Seattle sports history - Malcolm Smith.

The Richard Sherman free agency tour could be over before it ever really even gets started.

Although the 49ers are in desperate need of a strong cornerback, there are some concerns about Sherman's health and age. And Schefter says it's possible that Sherman, who grew up in California, will stay in the area after his visit.

The Seahawks drafted Sherman in the fifth round of the 2011 NFL Draft out of Stanford. The four-time All-Pro is recovering from Achilles surgery, as well as a procedure earlier this offseason for what he's said removed bone spurs from his other ankle.

Sherman, if healthy, could be an immediate starter in a 49ers scheme that resembles the Seahawks' version under 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh, a former Seahawks assistant.
