Jets should call Drew Brees if QB hits free agency

METAIRIE, La. - There is still no reason to fear that Drew Brees will suddenly reverse course and decide to leave the New Orleans Saints for a bigger offer elsewhere this week. Next offseason the Saints will have to decide if they want to pick up that option.

But the two sides are cutting things a little close. Brees, on the other hand, is capable of elevating the players around him.

Brees' decision to stay in New Orleans became even easier after the Saints re-emerged as Super Bowl contenders last season following a three-year playoff drought. The Saints have repeatedly said he isn't going anywhere.

Players can not be contacted directly until Wednesday, when the free agency signing period actually begins.

Richard Sherman to Seahawks Fans Burning His Jersey: 'I Didn't Abandon Anybody'
They had fallen off the face of the earth with the departure of Jim Harbaugh and the retirement/departure of their core players. The Oakland Raiders seemed to be in play when the Seattle Seahawks released Pro Bowl cornerback Richard Sherman on Friday.

Brees, 39, will become an unrestricted free agent on Wednesday.

Drew Brees has agreed to return to the Saints on a two-year, $50 million deal, according to multiple reports.

That road to the Super Bowl might seem a little too daunting for Brees, who would easily be the second best quarterback in the AFC behind Tom Brady if he signed with a team there.

The Saints are pushing their chips to the center with Brees and Payton once again in 2018.

Add in a young, improved defense (42 sacks, 20 interceptions, five fumble recoveries, 336.5 yards and 20.4 points allowed per game), and the Saints appear poised to make another push with Brees.

Not much other than rumors of interest from various teams happened on the first day of the tampering period, with the most notable story coming out of New Orleans byway of Minneapolis.

That deal included one of the top salaries in the National Football League (one new year at $24.25 million).

The deal includes $27 million guaranteed. They can. They have $45 million of salary cap space available.
