Woods and Els announced as Presidents Cup captains

According to the AP report, Woods will lead the USA into battle against an global side captained by Ernie Els.

Tiger Woods will be named the United States' captain for the 2019 Presidents Cup, according to the Associated Press.

File this one under "things we never thought we'd see" - Tiger Woods, US team captain.

Former world number one Woods and South African star Els have a long history in the event, including a famous 2003 duel where they competed in a sudden-death playoff that ended in a tie and saw the trophy shared. Worldwide golfers (who aren't European).

"Ernie carries the flag for worldwide golf as a legendary figure both on and off the golf course, while Tiger has been one of the most transcendent athletes the sport has ever seen".

"This is a huge honour for me", Woods said on Tuesday ahead of the Arnold Palmer Invitational. The US has won ten, with the global team winning just once.

He said: "I've played in the Presidents Cup for many years".

"The Presidents Cup has provided me with numerous best memories of my career", said Els. He could potentially be a playing captain given how well he's hitting it right now and the fact that he's finished in the top 15 in each of his last two PGA Tour starts.
