Donald Trump has turned his fire on Amazon with a series of complaints about the online retailer's tax practices and the threat it poses to smaller rivals. Inc. did not respond to a request for comment. However, starting around 2015, Amazon began paying sales taxes in the 45 states that asked for it - but this was only for items that Amazon or its subsidiaries sell directly, according to tax analyst firm True Partner Consultants.

The comments came a day after a report by the news site Axios that Trump was "obsessed" with Amazon, believing the tech giant fails to pay enough taxes and gets preferential treatment from its agreement with the postal service.

The report said Mr Trump had talked of using antitrust law to "go after" the company because he was anxious about small family stores going under. Using discounted shipping rates, Amazon outsources the door-to-door package delivery to the Postal Service.

"The post office actually makes a ton of money from Amazon", the source reportedly said.

Amazon also pays local property taxes on its distribution centers as well as on the Whole Foods stores it purchased past year.

After falling 4.4 percent Wednesday, shares fell to as low as $1,365 at 10 a.m. EST (1400GMT) Thursday, a decline of 4.6 percent, while the company's market value fell to $660 billion from a close of $724 billion Monday.

This would be good for Amazon's business, but raises the question of how much information we turn over to tech companies in the name of convenience.

Amazon also has a special agreement with the Postal Service to deliver packages on Sundays.

After a long runup over the past year, Amazon's stock has hit a rough patch, declining almost 10% over the past week to its current level of about $1,400 a share.

"Walmart was crushing the little guys before Amazon, and more of Amazon's growth is coming from the Walmarts of the world", Kerner said. "So has Starbucks, Barnes & Noble, Kroger and any other superstore that took share from small businesses". Jeff Bezos also owns The Washington Post, which is critical of the president.

United States media report that Trump's criticism of Amazon and Bezos may have stemmed from his misunderstanding of facts and his envy.
