Dutch lawyer Alex van der Zwaan, 33, was sentenced to 30 days in prison for lying to investigators about contacts with ex-Trump aide Rick Gates.

He had pleaded guilty on February 20 as Mueller intensified his investigation into potential collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation, and is the first person to be sentenced in the probe.

"This was more than a mistake".

Van der Zwaan covered up his discussions with Gates and a business associate based in Ukraine in September 2016, while the Trump campaign operation was in full swing. Mueller's office has said "Person A" has maintained ongoing ties to the Russian military intelligence service and had communicated with Gates and van der Zwaan during the 2016 presidential election.

On Tuesday, a Dutch lawyer who lied to investigators received the first prison sentence related to the probe. Van der Zwaan turned over secret recordings to Mueller's investigators that he had made of his conversations with Gates, the associate, and a senior partner at his law firm.

Berman Jackson concluded, however, that "the expressions of remorse here by the defendant. have been somewhat muted to say the least".
