Roma pulled off one of the great comebacks in European soccer history on Tuesday by knocking Barcelona out of the Champions League

It was an incredible night at the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals after Barcelona and Manchester City - two clubs deemed favourites to lift the title due to their league dominance - were eliminated in the quarter-finals stage - by AS Roma and Liverpool - leaving the entire football fraternity baffled with the results. Very hard to accept. We wanted to keep going.

It will come as little consolation now, but Barca remain the perpetrators of the most remarkable of all UEFA Champions League comebacks.

Valverde, who named the same side as the first leg, didn't make his first substitution until the 81st minute and said the buck stops with him for the defeat.

The first match in the Catalan capital ended with the score 4:1 - it seemed that Barcelona will not have problems with saving huge advantages, but the return game from the first moments went according to script of Lionel Messi and company. When you lose and the opposition are better then the analysis is often extreme.

City were however, unable to complete the much anticipated comeback as Liverpool hit back in the second half with goals from Mohammed Salah in the 56th minute, and Roberto Firmino putting the nail on the coffin in the 77th minute.

William and Kate will want to inform the Queen and their families before sharing their news with the world. He said both Prince William and Middleton have decided not to find out the gender of the baby in advance.

Barcelona-based newspaper Mundo Deportivo called the defeat "a historic debacle" and also took aim at the former Athletic Bilbao coach.

"The truth is that I made this choice to create more width, allow more counter-attacks and bring speed, but what really changed was the philosophy of the side and we have to continue like this now".

Roma captain De Rossi set up Dzeko's goal with a straight ball and the Bosnian striker muscled off defenders to shoot past Marc-Andre ter Stegen with his left foot.

Barcelona's only real chances of the first half came from two free kicks, both of which Messi missed high.

The referee didn't immediately point to the spot but then showed a yellow to Pique and awarded the penalty.

Lap 1 tussles saw Lewis Hamilton , who started P9, versus Max Verstappen , who made a flying start from 15th place. Frenchman Pierre Gasly was sixth in the Honda-powered Toro Rosso and Kevin Magnussen was seventh for Haas .

Barcelona has won 24 and drawn seven from 31 fixtures as clear leaders of the Spanish league, while winning six and drawing three Champions League games this season.

De Rossi flashed a header wide in the 69th minute, and 10 minutes later it looked like Ter Stegen had saved the away side's skin with an incredible close-range stop from Stephan El Shaarawy.

But three minutes later, the Barcelona goalkeeper had no chance when Manolas headed inside the far post.

"I'm not sure you cannot concede when you've got two strikers that don't put anything into defending", he said, per MailOnline's Robert Summerscales.
