Trump Cancels South America Trip to Weigh Action on Syria

Trump said late Monday that the US will respond "forcefully" to a suspected chemical weapons attack by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's regime over the weekend, after suggesting earlier that Russian President Vladimir Putin may share responsibility.

US President Donald Trump had been scheduled to make his maiden trip to Latin America for the eighth Summit of the Americas in Lima and travel to Colombia. The possible presence of Trump at the Summit of the Americas in Lima was seen as a cause of tension in the meeting, as the president was with an agenda aimed at seeking regional support for his hostile stance against Venezuela, as confirmed by his administration on Monday.

Since Trump has spoken to him twice since the chemical attack by the Assad regime to talk strategy, French President Emmanuel Macron will likely play a large role in the American government's response to the crisis. He described the raid as "an attack on our country in a true sense ... an attack on what we all stand for".

The summit would have put Trump face-to-face with Central and South American officials he has sharply criticized over immigration into the United States.
