The goals cancelled out Real's resounding win a week earlier but Lucas Vazquez won a last-gasp penalty and Juventus goalkeeper and captain Gianluigi Buffon was given a straight red card for venting his fury at English referee Michael Oliver.

Legendary Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon has slammed the referee for awarding a late penalty and sending him off in what was likely his final Champions League match on Wednesday (Thursday NZT).

Italy and Juventus goalkeeper, Gianluigi Buffon, was sent off in what might be his last Champions League appearance as his side nearly completed a comeback victory against Real Madrid, but failed.

But with extra time seconds away, Oliver pointed to the spot when Medhi Benatia's push on Lucas Vazquez was adjudged to be a foul and sent off Buffon for his reaction amid Juve's angry protests.

Sergio Ramos could face fresh Champions League ban after tunnel exchange
Ramos is one of Madrid's most important players and was sorely missed last night as Madrid surrendered a three goal cushion. Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger admits it's the Europa League or bust as they chase Champions League qualification.

"Ramos said the penalty was "claro" [clear] and I told him: "Not so "claro", let's say grey".

In the 93rd minute of the second leg between Juve and Real Madrid, this penalty decision would see Juve eliminated on aggregate.

"My pulse was racing but I stayed calm, I knew it was decisive", said Ronaldo.

"I don't understand why they protested the penalty", he said. "You can't destroy dreams like that".

Juventus president Andrea Agnelli urged the introduction of VAR to the Champions League, but Chiellini felt that missed the point in this case. "It's a pity, the performance of the boys remains, we confirmed - as did PSG last season and Roma last night - proved you can come back from 3-0 down to turn things around".

The Real Madrid forward's acrobatic effort helped his side to a 3-0 lead in the quarter-final first-leg as the reigning champions eventually booked their place in the final four.

Buffon had been the star of the show as he showed why he's still one of the world's best, despite his age, as he pulled off crucial saves to keep Juve's hopes alive.
