Senate Barrels Towards Showdown Over Pompeo Confirmation for State

The Senate Foreign Relations Committee this evening is scheduled to vote on CIA Director Mike Pompeo's nomination for Secretary of State.

Pompeo would be the only secretary of state in modern history to be confirmed by the full Senate without first obtaining a committee endorsement. Sen. Chris Coons, D-Del., who was on the list of past Democrats around the panel to announce that his vote, " said he is concerned that Pompeo "will embolden, " as opposed to reasonable or control" Trump's "most populous and instincts that are risky".

Critics say Pompeo is too conservative to represent the country on the world stage, given past harsh remarks about Islam and homosexuality and fears he would favour military action over diplomacy and be too likely to agree with Trump rather than step back and give his best advice to the commander in chief.

With a razor-thin Republican majority in the Senate and Democrats largely opposed to Mr Pompeo's nomination, the White House has been playing up his readiness for the job, casting him as an already crucial member of Mr Trump's foreign policy circle who sees him most mornings to help deliver the intelligence community's classified daily briefing.
