Manchester City's Sane won the young player prize, while Chelsea's Fran Kirby won the Women's Player of the Year award.

Salah heads into Tuesday's Champions League semi-final with Roma on the back of being crowned this season's PFA Player of the Year.

The 25-year-old, who was signed for £34m from Roma, is the first Egyptian to win the award, presented at Grosvenor House in central London on Sunday evening.

"My personal thing is to win something with the team", Salah said. "I would like to thank my team-mates and everyone at the club for helping me to make this happen".

He said: 'Yes, I think from the first day I left the Premier League it was always in my mind.

Salah also became the seventh Liverpool player to win the award in the club's history.

"If he (Kevin) doesn't win, congratulations to the guy who is going to win", Guardiola said.

Before his arrival there were questions about the size of the fee (a snip now at £36M) and about his previous experience of the Premier League (with Chelsea under Mourinho).

"But, on the other hand, considering the quality of the squad, the coach they have - Klopp, to me, is one of the best coaches in the world - it didn't surprise me". We've got to put on a similar performance - if not better - than we did against Manchester City [in the quarter-finals].
