Burning Man founder Larry Harvey dies at age 70

Harvey is credited with co-founding one of the most influential performance art events in history, the Burning Man festival: a weeklong impromptu city of 70,000 participants that arises annually on a dry alkali lakebed in northern Nevada - a spectacularly inhospitable environment.

Burning Man was founded in June 1986 when Mr Harvey and his friend Jerry Goodell burned a wooden man on Baker Beach in San Francisco to mark the summer solstice. He suffered a stroke on 4 April. In 2017, a man died after running into the Burning Man's flames. "And he said, 'Can you say that again?' And I did and we did it".

Festival-goers pay anywhere from $425 to $1,200 a ticket to travel to the scorching hot desert, according to the Associated Press, where they bring their own food, camp out and partake in a range of events.

Evans, who was in Arlington with Fitzpatrick, became the fifth Tide linebacker to be taken in the first round since 2010. McMillan suffered a season-ending knee injury in the first exhibition game past year but is expected to start in 2018.

Burning Man, which is a multiday festival now held in Nevada, is dedicated to art and community. A non-profit organization, the Burning Man Project, was eventually formed to run the operation, with Harvey serving as board president and "chief philosophic officer". "A network of dreamers and doers", is how the gathering is described on Burning Man's website.

Over the years, Harvey faced criticism for turning Burning Man into a cash cow.

"As he told one of us recently, Larry liked to create "scenes" that made people consider the world in a new way". He didn't fit a mould; he broke it with the way he lived his life. "He was 100% authentic to his core", praised his long-time friend and Burning Man CEO, Marion Goodell, on the organization's website.

In 2017, a man ran into Burning Man's flames, suffered burns over nearly all of his body and died.

In 2007, a prankster set fire to Burning Man four days early and it had to be frantically rebuilt while the man was charged with arson. In 1996, a man died after his motorcycle crashed into a van of festival-goers, and three others were injured in a separate incident involving a drunk driver, the AP reports. Harvey was adamant about the value of experiencing this type of culture.

He is survived by his son Tristan Harvey; brother Stewart Harvey; and nephew Bryan Harvey.
