Boy Scouts Remove 'Boy' from Name before Girls Enter their Ranks

Yesterday, the Boy Scouts of America-soon to be Scouts BSA-announced they were dropping the word "Boy" from their name for the main program for scouts ages 11 through 17. "Instead of addressing systemic issues of continuing sexual assault, financial mismanagement and deficient programming, BSA's senior management wants to add an accelerant to the house fire by recruiting girls", a spokesperson for the Girl Scouts told ABC News. "Scout me in celebrates the BSA's historic decision to serve families and welcome girls and boys to our programs", the organization stated on its website. "That is why it is important that the name for our Scouting program for older youth remain consistent with the single name approach used for the Cub Scouts". "Our girls are so strong and so committed to this organization, and we have a bright future ahead", said Patricia Pyke, Chief Executive Officer, Girl Scouts of Silver Sage.

The Boy Scouts say current youth participation is about 2.3 million, down from 2.6 million in 2013 and more than 4 million in peak years of the past.

While the Boy Scouts organization has been around for a long time, so has the Girl Scouts organization.
