Guatemala moves Israel embassy to Jerusalem, 2 days after US

Guatemala is now the second country to move its Israeli embassy back to Jerusalem. While Israel believes the city is its capital, Palestinians claim East Jerusalem as the capital of their future state, according to the Council on Foreign Relations.

"It's not a coincidence that Guatemala is opening its embassy in Jerusalem right among the first, you are always among the first", said Netanyahu.

Guatemala, the second country to recognise Israel as a state in 1948, has had a long history of military cooperation with Israel.

Most world powers do not recognise Israeli sovereignty over the entire city and says its final status should be set in peace negotiations. The United States opened its Jerusalem embassy in the southern Jerusalem's Arnona neighborhood on Monday. Placed during the week that Palestinian marks the 70th anniversary of Nakba, the cataclysmic exodus which followed the expulsion of 700,000 Palestinians from their homes, both openings are an attempt to divert the worldwide community's attention.
