Hawaii's Kilauea Volcano Erupts, Destroys Homes

The 2010 eruptions at Icelandic volcano Eyjafjallajökull caused a major volcanic ash cloud that grounded a vast proportion of air travel, especially to and from Europe, in April and May of that year.

In addition, the geological service reported that the volcano's activity could increase, "anytime", she will be accompanied by new emissions and explosions near the crater of Kilauea.

A shift in winds is expected to send the ash fall cloud from Kilauea into the southwest region of the erupting volcano summit, including the neighbourhoods of Wood Valley, Pahala, Punaluu, Naalehu, and Hawaiian Oceanview Estates.

There was no effect on air carrier operations to Hawaii on Wednesday, Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor said in an email.

Since May 3, residents of Hawaii's Big Island have been struggling with the fallout from the recent and ongoing eruption of the Kilauea volcano.

The ash isn't toxic but it can irritate the eyes, the nose and airways. It can make roads slippery, clog drinking water catchment systems common on the island and cause the failure of electrical power lines in large enough quantities, said USGS chemist David Damby. Here's a breakdown of the current status of Hawaii Island's tourism offerings.

A group of eager golfers didn't seem fazed Tuesday by an erupting volcano as they sneaked in a few rounds on Hawaii's Big Island.

As a result, officials announced most of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park would be closed indefinitely to keep visitors and park employees at a safe distance from a possible eruption.

Anderson, who was recently at Kilauea volcano, also discussed other impacts of the eruption on nearby communities including lava flows, ballistic projectiles and noxious gases.

No serious injuries or deaths have been reported from the eruption.
