The assailants drove a vehicle into the gate of police headquarters in the city of Pekanbaru on the Sumatra Island to stage the attack, AFP reported.
Earlier, the Riau Provincial Police confirmed that they had shot dead four terrorists attempting to attack the Riau Police Headquarters in Pekanbaru on Wednesday. The attack left one police officer dead and several wounded.
The attacks have put Indonesia on edge - and sparked a string of foreign government travel advisories - as the world's biggest Muslim-majority country starts the holy fasting month of Ramadan from Thursday.
One of the dead attackers is believed to have been wearing an explosive vest, according to an internal police document quoted by local media.
A police spokesman in Riau said they had not identified the perpetrators yet or determined their motive.

The attack was the latest in a string of militant attacks that have hit Indonesia since Sunday, beginning when a family of six suicide bombers, including young children, attacked three churches simultaneously in Indonesia's second biggest city, Surabaya.
Security forces have arrested hundreds of militants during a sustained crackdown since the Bali bombing.
Wasisto said the driver was apprehended and was being detained at Riau Police Precinct.
The suicide bombings killed 26 people, the 13 attackers included.
