Western portions of the Carolinas have seen more than 20 inches in the past two weeks, the National Weather Service said.

Widespread flooding was reported in McDowell County, including along the Catawba River and its tributaries like Mill, Crooked, Nix, Curtis and Mackey creeks.

A landslide shut down all westbound lanes on Interstate 40 at the top of Old Fort Mountain Tuesday night, but the roadway has since been cleared and reopened.

Spokesperson for McDowell County Emergency Management Karyn Yaussy said Wednesday as rain continues to move into the area, their biggest concern is now Lake James.

Eggleston warned of the possibility of more flooding as soon as Thursday evening, when there was a chance of additional rain.
