The volcano is located about 25 miles south-west of the capital Guatemala City.

Dozens of videos were popping up on social media and local TV, depicting the extent of devastation.

She said: "Not everyone escaped, I think they were buried".

Hundreds of rescue workers, including firefighters, police and soldiers, worked to rescue any survivors and recover any more bodies amid the still-smoking lava. In darkness and rain, the rescue effort was ordered suspended until early morning, municipal firefighters spokesman Cecilio Chacaj said. "There are injured, burned and dead people", Sergio Cabanas, the general secretary of Guatemala's Conred disaster agency, said on radio, according to the Guardian.

Mr Cabanas said four people died when lava set a house on fire and two children perished while standing on a bridge watching the eruption.

It's the second time this year it has erupted.

A total of about a million people have been affected by the eruption, the Guatemalan government says.

At an ad-hoc morgue in the town of Alotenango, at least three bodies lay covered with blue sheets.

David de Leon, spokesman for the disaster agency, said authorities had already evacuated about 300 people from nearby areas. Shelters were opened for those forced to flee.

It added that he said authorities began to send bulletins on the situation starting at 11:30 a.m.

President Jimmy Morales said a national emergency response was under way.

Ash has effected not only Guatemala City but the departments of Sacatepequez, Chimaltenango, Escuintla, and the popular tourist destination colonial town Antigua.

The conical Volcan de Fuego is 12,346 feet above sea level at its peak. Lesser amounts of ash reached the capital of Guatemala City some 25 miles away, forcing the closure of its global airport, CONRED said.
