Mike Pompeo draws firm line on North Korea as summit hangs in balance

It heralded the summit as part of a "changed era".

"We need to see an agreement that brings about the complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula".

The White House, in the statement, said that the ongoing discussions between the United States and North Korea had moved faster than expected. Senior diplomats from the United States and North Korea had at least two rounds of talks on Monday to hammer out a potential agreement to dismantle the regime's nuclear weapons program in exchange for security guarantees.

As the North Korean leader prepared for his meeting with US President Donald Trump, it appeared he had increased security which included taking his personal toilet on the flight.

"We will not be surprised by any scenario", said the official.

Yet Trump and Kim have yet to agree even on how to define denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula - the stated goal of the meeting. But the White House said he will instead leave at about 8 p.m. on Tuesday -almost 15 hours earlier.

The relative speed with which the state media got the news of Kim's arrival in Singapore out to the North Korean public suggests a certain level of confidence that the meeting will go well - or at least well enough.

Both Mr Trump and Kim have been trying to look as relaxed as they can before tomorrow morning's summit. Past nuclear deals have crumbled over North Korea's reluctance to open its doors to outsiders.

However, future investment in North Korea would not be without its risks.

A USA official told CNN Trump's departure was moved up by more than 12 hours because Kim set his departure for shortly after the summit.

Meanwhile, US and North Korean officials huddled at the Ritz-Carlton hotel ahead of the sit-down aimed at resolving a stand-off over Pyongyang's nuclear arsenal.

Trump again calls for readmitting Russian Federation to G7
The suspension was supported by the other members of the group, including the US, Canada, Japan and four European nations. Pakistani President Mamnoon Hussain and the prime minister of arch-rival India, Narendra Modi, are also in attendance.

Trump and Kim planned to shake hands, then hold a one-on-one meeting with only translators present before being joined by their respective advisers, the White House said.

The sense of anticipation was palpable as Mr Trump headed to meet Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on Monday, with people lining the streets waving cell phones.

Trump also reached Singapore on Sunday night.

There was also no sign of his sister, Kim Yo Jong, who has accompanied him to Singapore.

China, both Koreas and the United States would have to sign off on any legally binding treaty, so it is unlikely Kim and Trump will do more than express an intention to end the war.

The U.S. president is set to meet North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Singapore on Tuesday.
