Hamilton was hit to the back of the field by Raikkonen after just three corners at Silverstone but responded to finish second to Sebastian Vettel.

Hamilton was on a charge from the first lap, back up to seventh after nine laps but still 26 seconds behind his fellow four-time world champion.

"Every race is a team race, but today it was even more important for us to win here, because the last few years had been very hard to us", said Vettel. "Sometimes we talk nonsense and we learn from this".

Lapping well around the 5.891-kilometre course, Hamilton soon moved into the points and was 25 seconds off Vettel by lap 9, with the German 5 seconds ahead of Bottas at the front.

Team boss Toto Wolff said the incident was either "deliberate" or "incompetent".

While Lewis Hamilton backtracked on his criticism of Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen on Monday, the Italian team's chief Maurizio Arrivabene launched a scathing attack on the Mercedes team.

"There is no way I can compete with new tyres", he said.

Hamilton's team-mate Valtteri Bottas then led and a second safety vehicle, after Renault's Carlos Sainz and Haas' Romain Grosjean collided, kept the front four nose to tail and only fractions apart.

Hamilton's drive was remarkable; the two safety auto periods helped him, but there aren't many drivers in Silverstone's 70-year history that could have recovered as Lewis did. That released Vettel into a lead he would hold to the end, while Hamilton forced his way inside Bottas at Brooklands a lap later. Bringing people closer to the sport is one thing, but asking them to help develop their sport is the next step. Ricciardo's Red Bull teammate Max Verstappen was battling with Raikkonen but his race ended at lap 48.
