House Conservatives File to Impeach Rod Rosenstein

Months of House Republican criticism of the Justice Department has culminated in the introduction of articles of impeachment against Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein.

Congressional committees have sought information concerning the Department of Justice's (DOJ) handling of high-profile investigations into allegations of collusion between President Donald Trump's 2016 campaign, along with former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server to conduct official US diplomatic business. Meadows and Jordan could still force the issue on Thursday before lawmakers head home for the House's month-long August recess. The impeachment effort is led by North Carolina Rep. Mark Meadows, who talks to Trump frequently and often defends him to his colleagues.

House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) has not signaled his support.

A group of House Republicans introduced articles of impeachment against Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein on Wednesday. Mueller is investigating Russian interference in the 2016 election and whether Trump's campaign was in any way involved. "And the only thing that we have control over is the ability to bring impeachment straight to the floor", Meadows said.

Leaders of the Democratic party immediately condemned the action taken towards impeachment of Rosenstein.

The five articles charge Rosenstein of "high crimes and misdemeanours" for failing to produce information to the committees, even though the department has already provided lawmakers with more than 800,000 documents, and of signing off on what some Republicans say was improper surveillance of a Trump adviser.

"But starting tomorrow, we can bring it up as a privileged motion", he said.

"The DOJ is keeping information from Congress", Jordan said, referring to the Department of Justice.

Meadows and Jordan profess to have reached the end of their patience in a meeting with DoJ folk today that other Republican Members present seemed to find satisfactory.

Republicans claim the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Department of Justice officials say they have given lawmakers access to 880,000 pages they have requested.

The Department of Justice, under the supervision of Mr. Rosenstien, redacted FBI Agent Peter Strzok's personal relationship with FISC Judge Rudolph Contreras.

The failures cited within the articles include intentionally withholding embarrassing documents and information, knowingly hiding material investigative information from Congress, various abuses of the FISA process, and failure to comply with congressional subpoenas, among others.
