Judge in Manafort trial concedes mistake after berating Mueller’s prosecutors

‘Secret life’: Rick Gates forced to reveal affair at Manafort trial

A rare mea culpa came from U.S. District Judge T.S. Ellis for rebuking the prosecution earlier in former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort's fraud trial.

Paul Manafort recommended Stephen Calk, a Chicago banker involved in approving a loan at the center of Manafort's financial fraud trial, as secretary of the Army, according to testimony Tuesday from star witness Rick Gates.

Gates told the court in Alexandria, Virginia, that he had met with government lawyer Greg Andres and Federal Bureau of Investigation agents 20 times and been told only to tell the truth, without any guarantee that he will be spared prison.

It's unclear whether Ellis was only apologizing for the mixup with the IRS agent.

"I'm sorry, judge, I was", the prosecutor replied. "I thought he was needlessly evasive and argumentative", said Barbara McQuade, a former U.S. Attorney in MI who has been watching the trial and said she observed jurors reacting with negative body language as he testified.

Greg Andres, a prosecutor on special counsel Robert Mueller's team, somewhat softened the blows Manafort's attorney had inflicted during his cross examination.

Manafort's political work included advising Viktor Yanukovich on policy after he won the Ukrainian presidency, Gates said. "I was probably wrong in that", said Ellis.

Downing pressed again on whether that secret life covered those four years, Gates said it did.

Another was 29-year-old Nasim Ghanadan, who saw Hakimi as a mentor in the real estate industry, Ghanadan's brother said. The pilot of the Cessna 414 and all four passengers were killed, but nobody on the ground was hurt, authorities said.

Manafort is accused of filing fraudulent information to secure $16 million in loans from Calk's bank. He also admitted to embezzling "several hundred thousand" dollars from Manafort including funds used to finance a London apartment to engage in an extra-marital affair.

And Manafort made millions of dollars working as a political consultant for a pro-Russia party in Ukraine before he worked for the Trump campaign, which could raise questions about Trump's friendly rhetoric towards the country.

Following Gates' testimony, prosecutors resumed trying to make their case for financial fraud by Manafort through documentary evidence to demonstrate his control of offshore bank accounts containing millions of dollars not reported to the IRS as required by USA law.

But Downing wasn't able to re-ask Gates about four extramarital affairs.

He is the first subject of special counsel Robert S. Mueller's investigation to stand trial.

Prosecutors sought to soften the blow of the cross-examination by asking Gates to acknowledge his own crimes, including a lie to Mueller's team in February.

Lawyers for Mr Manafort are determined to impugn the credibility of Mr Gates.

Neither man was charged in connection with their Trump campaign work, but the trial has nonetheless been closely watched by a president who insists Manafort was treated shabbily and who continues to fume publicly about Mueller's investigation into potential ties between his associates and the Kremlin.

During the ensuing fist-fight, the woman now clutching the broom handle is knocked to the ground, but does not let go of her grip. Thomas says that when she refused to pay for the eyebrow job that she thought was done poorly, an argument ensued and escalated.

She said Manafort's passport was used to open many of them in US dollars, euros and British pounds. "I have taken responsibility".

"I've acknowledged there was a period where I had another relationship", said Gates, who is married.

Those who dealt with Manafort's taxes also testified that even though they asked Manafort whether he maintained any bank accounts overseas, he told them no. But she said the dressing downs are shaping how the jury views the prosecutors and, by extension, their case.

Cindy Laporta, one of the accountants, also testified that Manafort and Gates had used phony loan documents to improperly reduce Manafort's income and lower his tax bill.

Attorney Kevin Downing suggested the revelation would destroy Rick Gates's plea agreement with the special counsel's office but was blocked by an instant government objection.

After Gates testified that Manafort was "pretty good about knowing" where his money was, Ellis couldn't suppress a quip that appeared to call into question Gates' testimony.

The culmination came Wednesday when Judge Ellis lost his temper with Uzo Asonye, one of the prosecutors, after learning that an IRS agent on the witness list as an expert had been sitting in the courtroom watching the proceedings all week.

Manafort, who helped Republicans Gerald Ford and Ronald Reagan reach the White House, was Mr Trump's campaign chairman from May to August 2016.
