Family returns from Carr Fire evacuation to find Grant the fish happy and well-fed

California firefighters are making headway against more than a dozen blazes that continue to scorch massive swaths of the state, in large part because of cooling temperatures over the weekend and on Monday.

On Sunday, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection confirmed that the fire, which has destroyed approximately 1100 residences, has spread over 816 square kilometres and is 61 per cent contained.

The Mendocino Complex includes the Ranch and River fires and has burned almost 350,000 acres in Mendocino, Lake and Colusa counties. Burning operations were performed in more active portions of the fire, while mop-up and patrol efforts continued throughout the less active areas. "Sorry if we weren't supposed to".

The complex is one of about 110 major wildfires burning across the western United States which have burned more than 23,000 sq km, an area larger than the state ofNew Jersey, according to the National Interagency Fire Center.

It's burning along with the largest fire in California state history, the Mendocino Complex Fire which is over 302,086 acres. Another blaze - the Carr fire , further north - has killed at least seven people and destroyed more than 1,500 structures.

Data compiled by CAL FIRE, the state's fire agency, shows that fires for the year-to-date have burned five times more acreage in California compared the five-year average.

Crews were also working on the 35-hectare Devil Creek Fire, which is posing unique challenges to firefighters. It began as result of vehicle mechanical failure.
