Ex-Trump aide Manafort's defence rests, case headed to jury

Prosecution Rests Its Case in Manafort Tax Evasion and Bank Fraud Trial

Manafort's lawyers have not yet said whether they will call any witnesses or present other evidence in the caseMore

Andres says that when jurors follow the trail of Manafort's money, they'll find it's "littered" with lies.

Manafort has been charged with tax and bank fraud as well as failing to disclose foreign bank accounts. Manafort, 69, may simply elect to offer no witnesses and is unlikely to testify in his defense. The case doesn't address allegations of Russian interference in the 2016 election.

The trial is the first to arise in the investigation by special counsel Robert Mueller of ties between Trump and Russian Federation and related matters.

The jury heard from a former partner and a former accountant on how the long-time political consultant doctored his accounts and laundered tens of millions of dollars through offshore banks. The defense has tried to blame Manafort's financial mistakes on his former deputy, Rick Gates.

Death toll in Genoa bridge collapse rises to 35
State radio Wednesday quoted the prefect's office confirming a death toll of 35 and denying some news reports that put it at 38. The bridge spans a three-quarter-mile section of the coastal city and carries highway traffic between Italy and France.

Defense attorneys rested their case without calling witnesses on Manafort's behalf. Asked by U.S. District Judge T.S. Ellis III whether he wished to testify in his defence, Manafort responded: "No, sir".

The announcement came after a more than two-hour hearing that was closed to the public.

Paul Manafort recently told the judge presiding over his case that he will not testify during the trial. Manafort's lawyers asked the judge to toss out all the charges against him, but they focused in particular on four bank-fraud charges. He's also accused of fraudulently obtaining millions in bank loans.

Calk allegedly gave Manafort a $16 million loan that he didn't seem to qualify for in exchange for a possible high-ranking job in the nascent Trump administration.

Investment bankers and Wall Street automotive sector analysts have so far reacted with skepticism saying it would be hard for Mr. After adjusting for inflation, that's more than the record-setting buyout of RJR Nabisco that closed in 1989.

"They are all jury issues", Ellis said, explaining that he believed it should be up to the jury to decide.

US prosecutors on Monday rested their case against Manafort after 10 days of testimony alleging he evaded taxes and defrauded banks.

Prosecutors say Manafort hid money in offshore bank accounts and then used it to pay for over $6 million in NY and Virginia real estate, items such as antique rugs and fancy clothes, including a $15,000 jacket made of ostrich skin.

Still, the proceedings have drawn President Donald Trump's attention - and tweets - as he works to undermine the standing of the Mueller investigation in the public square.
