The body of former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee has been taken to his residence in the national capital where people can pay their last respects, Home Minister Rajnath Singh said. He had suffered a stroke in 2009, which reportedly weakened his cognitive abilities, following which he developed dementia.
He was a key figure in the development of India's nuclear programme, ordering weapons tests in 1998, which stoked fears of an atomic war with neighouring Pakistan, which also tested a nuclear device in response.
A journalist with the BBC said that Vajpayee will be remembered for "determination to pursue a peace process with neighbouring Pakistan" while another scribe called him "one of the most towering PMs".
Vajpayee was the prime minister between 1998 and 2004 when the National Democratic Alliance government was in power.

Vajpayee had only one functional kidney.
Speaking to The Indian Express, Sinha said that Vajpayee was "deeply hurt" "by Kargil, by Pakistani Army", and "was inclined to accept the fact that Sharif was taken for a ride by the Pakistani Army".
But the next year, when Islamabad sent fighters across the cease-fire line that divides the disputed Himalayan region of Kashmir between the nations, Vajpayee resisted military pressure to launch a counter-attack.
In the days after the pogrom, Vajpayee said he could not understand how Hindus could burn women and children alive, sadly asking a group of Muslim survivors: "Have we lost our way so much that we cease to be humans?"

Kelly, who deferred the credit for his promotion to his teammates, doesn't seem like he's going to shy away from that competition. It's a performance league, and everything we do is graded and it's counted. "It's more about what Chad has done".
Vajpayee never married but had a longtime companion who died in 2014 and whose daughter he adopted.
"It was Vajpayee's exemplary leadership that set the foundations for a strong, prosperous and inclusive India in the 21st century". He will be remembered for his vast contribution to bolstering #USIndia relations & for recognizing us as "natural allies".
He was conferred India's highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna, by the President of India in 2014.
He was being treated at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in Delhi, where he was admitted nine weeks ago. While India is observing seven days of state mourning as a mark of respect to Vajpayee, countries such as the United States, Russia and Japan too have condoled the sad demise of Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
