Big US retailers stick by Roundup after cancer verdict

The group cites internal emails obtained by US Right to Know that showed the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has been testing food for glyphosate for two years and has found "a fair amount". But given the direction that environmental legislation has been going since, say, January of 2017, the best bet may be to look towards the companies that use these ingredients rather than the government.

250 million pounds of glyphosate are sprayed on American crops every year, but the highest concentrations of the chemical are found in non-GMO wheat, barley, oats, and beans.

Other brands that tested positive for glyphosate included Kellog's Oat Bran, as well as granola and granola bars with oats.

Glyphosate is an herbicide linked to cancer by California state scientists, as well as the World Health Organization. Lowry says even organic products can contain pesticides. The most heavily contaminated were made with conventionally grown - as opposed to organically grown - oats. California's Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment is adding to its list of chemicals known to cause cancer.

He has been working to improve food safety standards for more than a decade.

"Once the oats are transported to us, we put them through our rigorous process that thoroughly cleanses them", the company said in a statement to the media.
