White House flag lowered again for McCain

Senators who knew John McCain well for his principled stances and even his occasional outbursts saluted their longtime colleague Monday, as President Trump finally relented and put the White House flag at half-staff.

The flag at the top of the White House has been lowered for a second time following criticism that it was raised to full mast too soon after veteran senator John McCain's death.

First lady Melania Trump thanked McCain for his service to the nation, which included more than five years as a prisoner of war and six terms in the Senate.

Rick Davis, former presidential campaign manager for McCain who is serving as a family spokesman, read the farewell message Monday at a press briefing in Phoenix.

Mr Trump has refused to publish a letter drafted by White House staff on the death of Mr McCain.

The flag was lowered again, and Trump issued a grudging pro-McCain statement that did not sound very Trumpian.

"Throughout his congressional career Senator McCain stood with Israel because throughout his life he stood up for America's allies and our shared democratic values", the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) said in a statement on Saturday.

Just a day after announcing he would be discontinuing treatment for an aggressive brain cancer, Senator John McCain died at 81.
