Reynolds was one of the hottest stars in the 1970s and 80s, putting in memorable performances in Deliverance, Smokey and the Bandit and Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. Though the actor lost the Oscar that year to Robin Williams, he did win a Golden Globe for the role.

Reynolds was also known for turning down famous roles.

He began appearing on television in the late 1950s, but it wasn't until 1962 that he secured a consistent role as the half-Native American blacksmith Quint Asper on Gunsmoke.

At the peak of his career, Reynolds was one of the most bankable actors in the film industry, reeling off a series of box office smashes until a career downturn in the mid-1980s.

His love life also drew headlines after a high-profile divorce to actress Loni Anderson preceded Reynolds bankruptcy filing in 1996, amid a budding romance with actor Sally Field.
