The outer rain bands of the massive storm will continue moving over the Outer Banks, lashing the barrier islands off the coast of North Carolina that are a popular tourist destination.

At 2pm (1800 GMT), Florence was over the Atlantic Ocean about 145 miles (230 kilometres) east-southeast of Wilmington, North Carolina, and moving northwest at 10 miles per hour, the NHC said.

The storm's forward motion has slowed 11km/h since Wednesday (local time), which was predicted as the storm nears the coast.

Hurricane Florence continues to drop category, but not unsafe, while hundreds of thousands of people try to get away from the coasts of the two Carolinas and Virginia.
